Socially Responsible Investment: What is it?

Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) aims to ensure that you as the investor can support companies that adhere to policies that meet your ethical views. You might also see references to “ethical”, “green”, “sustainable” or “ESG” (Environmental, Social and Governance). These all come under the broader umbrella of Socially Responsible Investing.

Funds that offer SRI have strategies that will filter their holdings according to criteria that match the agreed objectives. Screening can be ‘negative’ in which a particular company’s shares will not be held, for example, an armaments business, or ‘positive’ where shares will be held due to their social impact.

What are the screening categories?

The most common screening criteria used include:

  • Human rights
  • Health
  • Urban regeneration
  • Labour relations
  • Environmental issues
  • Education
  • Business ethics
  • Community relations
  • Armaments

Furthermore, most large fund management houses offer SRI funds and there are other specialist managers that focus on this type of investment. Also, as a firm, we can recommend the funds that meet your ethical views.
