Will I get a refund on Private School Fees?

For clients paying private school fees, it looks very possible that your child or children will not be returning to school before the end of the Summer Term in July. This begs the question will parents have to pay school fees for the Summer term which are normally due at the end of April?

The Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Council, Julie Robinson said-

“This is one of the issues that will be dealt with at school level, depending on individual policies and contracts with parents”

The Financial Times recently quoted solicitor, Ellie Spencer of Goodman Derrick LLP based in London as saying-

“Parents are paying for a service and might be able to argue that the school is not providing that service. Even if the school provides online teaching, this is not the whole service, so parents might be entitled to a discount”

What should my first line of action be?

A good place to start would be to hunt down the contract or agreement signed when your child or children entered the school. This should help you find out what provisions are in place. Some of the larger independent schools may be in a better position to offer some form discount or help with fees.

You may have taken out a school fees insurance policy and this will normally provide parents with cover against the loss of fees in the case of injury or illness.
