Divorce: Why you need a Financial Adviser to help you?

woman talking about divorceBy Rachel Efetha, Chartered Financial Planner.

Anyone of a certain age will never forget that Christmas Day in 1986 where Den handed Angie divorce papers.  For a bit of nostalgia, you can watch it here.

13 years later, in 2018, 13 people filed online for a divorce on Christmas Day itself.  Then, the many people who just couldn’t face another Christmas with their spouse contacted lawyers in their droves on 7th January 2019, the first working Monday of the year, dubbed ‘Divorce Day’.

January always sees a spike in divorce numbers, following the stress of the Christmas holidays in a strained marriage.

When getting a divorce, it’s really important to get an Independent Financial Adviser early on. I deal with lots of divorcing couples to help them get the best deal.

Divorce case study.

One lady I dealt with recently was made a divorce offer on the assumption of an 8% investment return and offered all cash and no pension. I argued that with absolutely no investment experience and a low-risk profile, an 8% return was ridiculously high. Additionally, that with no pension provision of her own and as a part-time midday supervisor had little capacity to build up a pension in her own rights. Because of my input, she got a higher overall settlement and a share in the pensions too.
