financial education studentBy Rachel Efetha, Chartered Financial Planner.

At University, the first thing I was told in my first lecture was that on day one of employment, I should start paying into a pension.  However, I was studying BA (Hons) Financial Services and learning about pensions was part of the syllabus.  I wonder how many engineering students had the same advice from their lecturer?

Sadly, financial education for our young adults is severely lacking, which is why our professional body, the Personal Finance Society (PFS), is launching a new pro bono programme to encourage engagement with secondary schools to raise the profile of the insurance and financial planning professions to young adults as a career option and provide some basic financial education.

I feel strongly that good money skills are as essential as learning to cook and drive when it comes to life skills, which is why I have volunteered to be an Education Champion for PFS and will deliver the programme to secondary schools in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire when it is rolled out later on in the year.
