It was announced in the 2025 Budget that changes to the ISA rules will be introduced from 6 April 2027, including a new limit on the amount that can be held in a Cash ISA.
So, what’s changing?
For those under age 65, the amount that can be paid into a Cash ISA will be limited to £12,000. The overall ISA allowance will remain at £20,000, meaning the remaining £8,000 can be invested in another type of ISA, such as a Stocks & Shares ISA or Innovative Finance ISA.
Those aged 65 or over will continue to have the full £20,000 ISA allowance available for cash savings.
There are also a number of anti-circumvention measures being introduced to prevent the new Cash ISA limit from simply being avoided by using other types of ISA. These include changes relating to cash and money market investments held within Stocks & Shares ISAs.
Anything else I need to be aware of?
There are also proposed changes to Lifetime ISAs from April 2028. The Lifetime ISA is expected to be replaced by a new First-Time Buyer ISA. These changes are currently subject to consultation, so we will provide further information once the final rules are confirmed.
