NS&I increase savers’ rates.

National Savings & Investments (NS&I), the Treasury-owned bank, has increased the rate of interest on more of its savings accounts as it attempts to keep up with rising interest rates.

Its one-year guaranteed bonds, the only ones on sale to new customers, increased from 4 per cent to 5 per cent. The two and three-year bonds, which both pay 5.1 per cent, are only available to those with existing bonds who want to renew them when they mature.

Why do National Savings and Investments remain popular?

National Savings and Investments is unique because all deposits are guaranteed by the Treasury. This is unlike deposits with commercial banks that are only guaranteed up to £85,000 per bank or building society under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

What about Premium Bonds?

Good news here too. With more than £121 billion held in Premium Bonds, this is still Britain’s favourite way of saving.

The rate of the prize fund will increase from 3.7 per cent to 4 per cent, making this the best rate since 2007.
